In this video I discuss one of the most gripping topics known to man (financial planning).

Seriously, planning for an early retirement has to be a part of striving for success (whatever that means). Regardless, you should have a plan to get your money working for you.

And…

Getting your money working for you is the main point of this book. Early Retirement Extreme is all about getting as many of your dollars invested into income producing assets as possible.

While the author does get deep into some of philosophical underpinnings for the Financial Independence Retire Early movement, he also gives tons of practical advice for saving and investing more.

What I liked most about this book is the authors extreme approach. He uses this book as a thought exercise to get the reader thinking about how they would approach early retirement if they had no limits on their ability to save and invest.

The author can give you a real picture of what “no-limits” saving and investing looks like as he lived this lifestyle with his wife prior to his own early retirement.

The author painstakingly details everything he did to get his own personal spending down to around $7,000 per year for a number of years. He mentioned that this amount of expenses allowed him to retire on between $150,000 and $250,000 depending on the time of year he was checking his accounts. (he retired close to the beginning of the 2008-2009 recession).

This account of the author’s own actions to reduce his savings is worth the price of the book alone. In addition to those sections he talks about the mindset and philosophy needed to make this lifestyle a reality.

now even if you don’t want to live off $7,000 per year ( I definitely don’t) this book will give you many practical ideas to improve your quality of life and reduce your expenses.

This last part is worth emphasizing. The author discusses many ways that saving money can improve your quality of life and make you a happier person. This is one of the main points the book emphasizes repeatedly.

Finally, the book gives a ton of practical steps you can take to make your life more fulfilling and replace many time and money wasting activities with things that will add value to your life.

In general this is definitely one of the top 10 book I have ever read, maybe top 5, possibly top 3. Regardless, it’s great, buy it or at least watch some of the in-depth reviews of the book online.

WARNING – This book has only a 4 star review average on amazon (HUGE Red Flag right???) – Well, this book offers way more detail then your average financial planning books. The author admits that he was a PhD student and self-proclaimed physical / computer science nerd. He wrote the book like a text book. It is well organized and thoughtful but goes into extreme depth on the topics the author felt needed that treatment. I believe this was a huge barrier to enjoyment for many people who expected a 90% motivational / 10% practical personal finance book. Early Retirement Extreme is more like 10% motivation / 20% practical detail / 70% concepts, philosophy and mindset behind early retirement. If this is your first FIRE book, this is probably not the one for you. But if your wanting to destroy any mental barriers you have to saving and investing more, this book is without equal.
