‘Fire and Blood’ by George R. R. Martin: Fantasy Book Review. Episode 189 – Friday Fantasy Show.
There is a new George R. R. Martin book! But it’s not the next novel in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, oh no, instead The Bottled Imp is transported back to before the events of ‘A Game of Thrones’.
‘Fire and Blood,’ by George R. R. Martin has illustrations by Doug Wheatley, and was first published by HarperVoyager in November 2018.
This history traces events of House Targaryen, the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria, and how they took up residence on Dragonstone. From the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, Martin recounts the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold onto power, all the way to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.
‘Fire and Blood’ aims to answer questions such as “What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons”, “What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes?” and “What was it like in Westoros when dragons ruled the skies?”
If you love ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, then the chance to read more about the life and times of Westeros is a hard chance to pass up. Some of the text has been published before, in short stories, and 200,000 words were removed from the manuscript of Martin’s companion book ‘The World of Ice and Fire’ and were included in ‘Fire and Blood’.
If that wasn’t enough to get your fantasy brain excited, there is a plethora of black and white line illustrations by Doug Wheatley. These ink drawings are exquisite and compliant Martin’s writing beautifully.
