As a key contributor of entries into this five-volume set, this publication documents significant films from the earliest days of cinema to the present day.
The entries contain comprehensive credits, an extensive, fully updated bibliography, and a critical essay by a leading writer on film. The choice of films is based on the recommendations of an advisory panel of distinguished international film critics and historians. Incorporating 150 new entries, the 630 entries are arranged in a new, more readable format, and presented on a larger page size.
This is the first of five volumes, to be completed by 1991. It incorporates 650 films and is expanded both in coverage and physical format from the first edition (1984-87), which included 500 films. The improved format, especially in the arrangement of the bibliographies, makes it considerably easier to use. Entries are alphabetical by film title in the original language (e.g., Popiol i Diament , not Ashes and Diamonds ) but cross-references to other versions of the title are now provided. Along with bibliographies, each entry contains a brief synopsis/critical essay, credits, and miscellaneous production data. This edition is a major advance over the first edition ( LJ 11/1/84; an LJ “ Best Reference” in 1985), but it unaccountably omits the criteria for inclusion. Recommended for all general collections.– Roy Liebman, California State Univ. Lib., Los Angeles
Library Journal – Library Journal
Greatly revises and expands the 1984 first edition of Volume one of the astute and elegant five-volume reference to the world’s most significant films and filmmakers. One hundred new films have been added, bringing the total to 650, arranged in crisp, clean entries on large 81/2×11″pages, and illustrated with luminous stills. In addition to complete production credits, cast lists, and excellent select bibliographies, each entry includes an expository essay by a significant critic, the essays being models of thoughtful, unpretentious scholarship and love of film.
