Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Keras, & TensorFlow (Book Review)
Video / July 15, 2020

On my quest to find good data science books, I came across Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Keras, &TensorFlow. The book has been recommended all over the internet and even from a few friends who are data scientists. As an overall rating I give it 4.5 stars out of 5. Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Keras, & TensorFlow (affiliate link) https://amzn.to/3cKzILG DO NOT BUY THE FIRST EDITION! It is shorter, lacks color graphics, does not cover the newer TensorFlow 2, and on Amazon it is more expensive (as of right now). Who is the book for? 1) the book is great for beginners 2) those who have a strong statistics and math background 3) and experienced data scientists who want a reference book Who is the book NOT for? 1) those who are experienced in data science looking to advance their knowledge and understanding 2) those looking for a mathematically rigorous textbook This book has a great sweet spot of programming and general understanding. I compare it to two other books so you can get an idea of what the book is good at and what you might want a different book for. Below are the other books reviewed. 1)…

Python for Kids (Book Review)
Video / April 12, 2020

“Python for Kids” by Jason R. Briggs was a delight to read even for someone with many years of programming experience. The book does an amazing job and creating fun and easy to understand examples. The problems at the end of each chapter make you utilize many concepts and the solutions can be found on the book’s website. The book teaches computer science principles instead of just teaching people to memorize code. The book is a great resource for kids and adults if you want to learn to program and have no prior experience. I give this book a 5/5 stars! I planned on providing an affiliate link HOWEVER due to COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) I will be providing a general link so I do not violate any laws. The video is intended for my usual adult audience however given the name of the book, it will also be useful to kids as well. Deep Learning with Python (Book Review)
Video / March 15, 2020

I am happy to have read, “Deep Learning with Python” by Francois Chollet. The book is a 5/5 stars! He lays a easy to understand base foundation for the reader while providing and explaining simple code. I really liked the way he started with a simple model and then added more details to it for a better fit while providing testing and logic as to why it was better. The code also follows the same progression where it is short and simple at the beginning and then becomes longer and more detailed as the models become more complicated. Traditional neural networks, CNN (convolution neural networks), and RNN (recurrent neural networks) are all covered in great detail with real examples. There are many cool topics covered such as generative adversarial networks. The book also does a great job at pointing out how deep learning can be used and what has been over hyped in the media and online. Advances in Financial Machine Learning (book review)
Video / January 27, 2020

Today’s book review is, “Advances in Financial Machine Learning” by Marco Lopez de Prado. I gave this book a 4/5 stars. The book does a good job at trying to teaching something complex in a short format without being too high level. The best part of the book is the discussion around setting up a team with the right structure. I have seen the same problems he has seen where teams back-test incorrectly or they over fit the model to the out of time sample by looping back. He covers why machine learning fails in practice (people don’t implement it correctly) and I have seen similar issues with traditional statistics. The book is a good book if you want to see a few new ideas and how to structure finance problems. Data Visualization: A Practical Introduction (Book Review)
Video / January 12, 2020

Today’s book review is, “Data Visualization A Practical Introduction” by Kieran Healy. I give this book a 4/5 stars. This book is not a cookbook where you can see fancy charts and copy and paste code. This book covers the basic theory behind charts and plots as well as common mistakes that will miss lead you and your viewers. The book is well written and uses ggplot2. You will learn how to set up plots in R which is powerful for customizing your own charts and plots.
