‘Who’s Jerry?’ Book Review – Helping Kids Understand Mental Illness
Video / December 22, 2020

The children’s book ‘Who’s Jerry?’ was written as a tool to facilitate conversation about mental illness, particularly schizophrenia, with young kids. It tells the story of a young girl named Imani who’s mom is acting a little strangely and she’s very confused and hurt by it. It follows their journey of getting medical help and a diagnosis, and of what follows that in terms of creating a support network for Imani’s mom and medications. This book is really the first I’ve seen that tries to bridge this topic with a younger audience. It is a wonderful attempt to do so, though I also discuss some of the problems I had with it too. In general, I think it is a wonderful tool to use as a starting point for facilitating conversations with kids about mental illness and schizophrenia. When We Go Walking – Kid Book Review
Video / September 12, 2020

See what Haylie, age 8, has to say about When We Go Walking by Cari Best, illustrated by Kyrsten Brooker. Kindle Edition: http://amzn.to/HZG5g0 Hardcover Edition: http://amzn.to/17G89As “I would give this book 500 stars because I like the drawings in the book. There’s like a lot of pastels in here and I like how the illustrator designed the people.” — Haylie, age 8 “Best’s engaging text is complemented by Brooker’s collage illustrations that are full of details for readers to pore over. This cheerful story will inspire children to look for treasures of their own.” — School Library Journal “Brooker’s signature paint-and-collage illustrations brim with details, and her pigtailed girl exudes happiness and curiosity. A reminder to appreciate the small moments in life.” — Booklist “A tempting invitation to turn any walk into an equally fruitful ramble, even if the treasures are gathered only by eye rather than by hand.” – Kirkus Reviews ABOUT THE BOOK Wendy and her exuberant family of walkers discover new things on Rambling Road every day in all kinds of weather. No one keeps the things they find except for Wendy: numbers and letters, ribbon and string, a bucket, a ball, a wheel from a wagon….

This is a quick book summary and analysis of The Giver by Lois Lowry. This channel discusses and reviews books, novels, and short stories through drawing…poorly. Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Minute-Book-Reports/1148331925195691 This is a story about a boy named Jonas who lives in a somewhat sheltered community. Jonas lives with his Father, a newborn caretaker, his Mother, a judge of some kind, and his younger sister, Lily, an imaginative girl who asks a lot of questions. This community regards age as extremely important, tracking each boy and girl with various labels based on their age. Because Jonas is turning twelve, he will be assigned his job. And while his friends and peers are assigned regular jobs in the community, he is selected to be The Receiver, a prestigious position that must learn and keep the memories of the past. He begins training with the previous Receiver, The Giver. The Giver is an old man who is wise and tired. The Giver begins transferring memories from the past to Jonas through touch. At first this is exciting because he experiences things like snow and color, which are absent from this community. However, The Giver then transfers memories of pain and other negative…

About the book (Amazon): Another cartoon novel in the tradition of the “Wimpy Kid” series. Like other protagonists in this genre, Marty deals with small-time bullies, misunderstood school assignments, and clueless parents. Marty is more than a little clueless himself. He finds a note that says “An alien is observing you.” Marty immediately pegs the alien as his taciturn teacher Mr. McPhee. He follows his teacher around, even breaking into his computer and rear-ending his car. It’s too bad Marty remains oblivious to a new student, Analie, who seems to be everywhere Marty is, takes copious notes about his adventures, and even talks in a robotic voice. This incident-packed book features the usual bathroom…

Matilda – Book Review
Video / November 29, 2019

An evaluation for Roald Dahl’s “Matilda”. It is all about a youthful girl who’s a genius. She contends together with her negligent parents and her half-mad, violent principal. She also develops telekinetic forces. I give this book a ten from 10.
