Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi || Reading Vlog & Book Review || Historical Fiction, No Spoilers
Video / May 31, 2020

Homegoing (2016) is a powerful piece of historical fiction spanning three hundred years of slavery through seven generations, starting with two half sisters in eighteenth-century Ghana whose destinies are vastly different. Effia marries a British slave trader called James Collins and lives a comfortable life in the luxurious Cape Coast Castle, while Esi is imprisoned in cramped, squalid conditions in the castle’s dungeon before being sold with thousands of others into the slave trade and shipped off to work on plantations in America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised. This is the only the second ever “reading vlog” that I’ve done on this channel, so please give me your honest feedback. I’m personally finding it quite fun to spontaneously film a couple of minutes each day and then put everything together at the end, but if you prefer the more traditional “sit down” book review videos that I used to do before, then please let me know. Or if you think there’s anything I could improve, I’d love to hear. My social media links: Twitter: Instagram: Goodreads:

‘The Iron King’ by Maurice Druon: Fantasy Book Review
Video / February 15, 2020

The Bottled Imp – Episode 24 Fantasy Book Review. ‘The Iron King’ by Maurice Druon The Imp takes a look at ‘The Iron King’ Book One of The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon, published by HarperVoyager in 2013. George R. R. Martin calls this ‘the original ‘Game of Thrones’! Wow! That’s quite a claim. Martin has written the foreword to this edition, explaining the reason why. He states that his book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)’ has been described by reviewers, as ‘historical fiction about history that never happened, flavoured with a dash of sorcery and spiced with dragons’. He continues to argue that historical fiction and fantasy are ‘sisters under the skin, two genres separated at birth’. I’d agree with that assessment whole-heartedly and so ‘The Iron King’ is a strong contender for being a Game of Thrones sibling. Or maybe more of a father or mother as ‘The Iron King’ was published way back in 1955 whereas A Song of Ice and Fire was first published in 1996. I can see many influences from ‘The Iron King’ that Martin has been inspired by when creating his book series but I can also see…

‘Prince of Thorns’ by Mark Lawrence: Fantasy Book Review.
Video / December 13, 2019

The Bottled Imp – Episode 27 We at Imp Towers crack open the pages of ‘Prince of Thorns’ Book One of The Broken Empire by Mark Lawrence, published by HarperVoyager in 2011. ‘The Thorns taught him a lesson in blood.’ So begins a tale of destruction, murder, pillaging and immorality. But what is the price that the privileged young royal, Jorg Ancrath, will have to pay? Tuning his back on his royal upbringing, Jorg leads a band of dangerous and nasty outlaws in a serious of seemingly pointless raids and atrocities across a land that is in chaos and at war with itself. To what ends is this justified? Why would a group of hardened thieves and murderers follow and take orders from a mere child? What is Jorg seeking and will his life of crimes catch up with him? There’s a sticker on the cover of my copy with Conn Iggulden proclaiming, “Excellent – on a par with George R. R. Martin” Is that statement true? Martin’s acclaimed series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ is now the benchmark for fantasy fiction, and some may say, fantasy TV too. So to say that a novel is on par with…
