This is my book review of Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, an 1872 novel, and one of the earliest on the subject of vampires. Carmilla leans heavily on the Castle of Otranto for what would become gothic cliches and Camlet’s dissertation on spirits and apparitions for its historical context and its methods of dealing with vampires! Carmilla is considered a classic horror tale.
