the 100 dollars startup book review | Chris Guillebeau

1. Passion is only 1/3 of the equation, you also need skills and customers.
Story: You know that one friend that went to college to pursue his passion without having any skills in it, or without the skill being in demand.
Results: They Graduate with student loan debt and no job.
What to do: You want to make sure You enjoy what you pick
You’re Skilled at it
People will pay for it
Example:
A: I love signing but I probably im not skilled at it, and no one would pay to hear me sing
B: I like Solving business-related problems and im good at it, people would pay for my solutions because it would make them more money.
2. If you want your passion to be more than a hobby, focus on income and costs.
Story: I know this family member and she’s super talented, and she’s been drawing for the longest time ever but hasn’t sold significant yet.
Results: She focuses a lot on the passion and the hobby but not enough on the marketing aspect of it.
What to do: You have to run test and see if people care enough to buy what your making or if its really just a hobby and costing you money
Example:
A: I’m the best Pizza eater in the 21 first century but it was that to be profitable.
B: I would like to do research on pizza companies, how people on youtube get paid to eat and collaboration with dominos, and so on.
Tip: Sometimes a hobby is a hobby, and that’s okay.

3. Keep your plans simple, because action beats them every time.
Story: I had a big issue where everything needed to be perfect before I did it, and for some reason, I felt that the more complicated something was, the more efficient it was.
Results: Working with people, they had a hard time understanding my work because I over complicated it too much.
What to do: Focus on the actions that produce results and keep them simple
Tip: Whatever it is your doing, they are usually 4 different ways to do it, always make it simple if you can.

4. What people want and what they say they want is not always the same
Story: every year people complain about a product that over 200million people buy worldwide, that’s the iPhone. People think they know what they want, but really they don’t.
Results: Apple is always pushing technology forward, whether the customers want them to or doesn’t
What to do: Focus on what the customer really wants, not what they say they want. (it’s different)
Ps. If your getting 100 positive comments and feedback and one person is giving you crazy feedback look for positives inside of it, but the customers isn’t always right.

5. Be ahead of the problem
Story: You ever tried to something online and had problems buying, returning or with customers service
Results: Usually, that would mean you might not come back to that business buy from them.
What to do: Focus on thinking about the problems before they come up and having a solution ready.
Example: before you launch a business, think about everything that could go wrong and figure out the solutions.
